I wish

While still working on my Dogma essay, I decided to post my wish list for this Christmas season. I know, I know, I already made my Christmas list, and it was a pretty extensive one at that. But this wish list isn't about presents... at least not the tangible kind you can wrap with paper. This list is all about the way I wish things were. So here it is.

  • I wish those in interacial relationships did not have to endure family gossip and animosity.
  • I wish I could switch the salaries of professional ball players with those of factory workers and elementary school teachers. That way, these people would be truly compensated for the work they do, rather than being grossly overpaid or grossly underpaid.
  • I wish we'd stop calling Curt Schilling a hero, and save that honor for real heroes like Margaret Hassan and Deitrich Bonhoeffer.
  • I wish overweight people were not made fun of.
  • I wish Americans were more afraid of drunk drivers, lung cancer, gun accidents and domestic violence than they are of terrorism. The chances of getting run off the road by an SUV with a Bush/Cheney sticker are much greater than getting popped by Osama bin Laden.
  • I wish Christians in the United States cared more about promoting mercy than demanding that city hall be covered in Christmas-themed lawn junk.
  • I wish those who order wars were required to fight on the front lines.
  • I wish the American definition of moral values included abstaining from flag-worship, treating the homeless with dignity, and reacting with compassion to victims of AIDS.
  • I wish pet rats lived longer than two or three years.
  • I wish Christmas was a time to remember Christ as a grown man that spoke of mercy, not a silent infant incapable of pissing off sanctimonious religious leaders.
  • I wish Christians cared as much about the born as the unborn.
  • I wish our desire to care for the planet and all the people living on it was stronger than our desire to have the biggest, most bad-ass motor vehicle. I wish people who drive Hummers would rethink their decision.
  • I wish this list didn't have to be so long.

I really liked this list of wishes. I wish for pretty much the same thing.

Aubrey on December 15, 2004 02:52 PM

Santa, can I get the same stuff that Drina is getting?

Joan on December 15, 2004 03:01 PM

yeah, what you said :)

geeky on December 15, 2004 04:42 PM

Amen also...

Linnea on December 16, 2004 12:44 PM

of course this list puts your name on another list.

I wish that people would stop wondering what material object they want for Christmas, and spend the day giving back and showing that they care. America would change dramatically in just one day if everyone decided to go out and help their community in some way.

Kevin Ballie on December 16, 2004 05:55 PM

My wishes....

I wish there were a cure for AIDS and Cancer and all other life threatening diseases.

I wish I had had the courage to see my Grandmother one more time before she died.

I wish I had told her how much she meant to me.

Like Kevin, I wish people wouldn't worry about how many presents are for them under the tree, and maybe give a gift to someone you know won't have one under the tree.

I wish that everyone who reads this has a happy and safe holiday season.

Merry Christmas.

I wish that the Angel Clarence would give George W. Bush the gift of seeing what this world would look like if he had never been born, and then GWB would decide to go ahead and jump off the bridge because he would see that the whole world is much worse off for his being here.

Straight Shooter on December 18, 2004 01:54 PM

No, he would not commit suicide. He would change... he would experience conversion, and begin doing good in the world. He would begin living honestly.

I wish America were truly the democracy it claims to be; in that case this four-year global nightmare would never have happened, or at worst it would be over in another month.

I wish all the so-called "Christians" who blindly support Bush would be convicted of their heresy and repent. Neither the Bible, nor Jesus say it's OK to constantly lie to people from the illegal and immoral war in Iraq to Social Security to tax cuts for the rich (all to benefit the rich, by the way). Yet, these "Christians" claim Bush is a "Christian leader" even though he's turning it into the Fourth Reich.

Gregg on December 19, 2004 07:11 AM

Hell yeah Drina! Everything you said is pretty right on. But I do have a sort of selfish wish for Christmas that I know you will understand:

I wish time travel were possible.

'Nuff said right? I would give up all the friends I made this year to just get one, single, solitary one back...

Heather (hmgibson) on December 19, 2004 04:37 PM

Another Amen. As I read the Gospels, it seems that there was a "Religious Right" in Jesus's society, too. They were called the scribes and Pharisees. And on the first Good Friday, you could find a mob of them in Pilate's courtyard, shouting "Crucify Him!" I've almost reached the point where I hesitate to identify myself as Christian, for fear I might be mistaken for one of the sanctified fascists.

If we were a TRULY Christian nation, we would have the most generous welfare state for the common citizen in the world, instead of the "sink-or-swim for the common citizen and socialism for fat cats" that we have now.

All your wishes and your wonderful ideals and values must be put into action - go out into the bible- belt heartland and debate until you are blue in the face. Unfortunately many Christians find their argument a defense against reality, intelligent debate, and refuse to step out into the cold - of course you and I know that the warmth they experience is temporary and that lasting warmth only comes from compassion and giving. I will not turn out the light while there is still energy in the Universe - please do not give up on your wish list - make it come true and with a little help from Santa it may happen one day.
Love to you all and have a wonderful holiday and remember the good shall prevail, Robert

A wonderful list! I wish for all of those things, too. And I am glad that this list was posted at www.buzzflash.com, or I might not have seen you.

Bless you, and a happy new year...

I wish that I had medical insurance. Three doctors got my diagnosis wrong, then my medical insurance ran out. Now my illness is a pre-existing condition. If you don't have medical insurance in America, you can just die in the parking lot. Please have the courtesy to die quietly so as not to distub the paying customers!

I wish I could ride down the street just once without hearing that garbage coming from those rattling loudspeakers that the young people have in their cars now. Really great musicians there.. NOT. The only "music" is a dumb bass player playing just one note over and over again at a super volumn that it rattles the boot from the car it is coming from. A bimbo kid could play one note over and over again. No other music, just that dumb single bass note over and over again. And the "lyrics". I had the unfortunate experience of being beside one while my child was in the car with me. Between the dumb bass notes, all I heard was a bunch of cussing and the "N" word over and over again, and the rapper was telling how he was going to "F" the world and his white hoe. Really great stuff for my daughter to be subjected to. You can't roll up the window and ignore it because of the volumn. I'm thinking of getting one of them foghorns that they use on lighthouses and put it on my car so that I can blare it back at the idiots that do this.

I wish there were more people who believe in what all of you believe in.. saving the planet, caring about people, and what christmas is really about, and not about presents.

mila on December 23, 2004 12:41 PM

For Christmas I wish that all the anti-Bush and anti-military could get their freedom of speech (that the military and the Commander In Chief so protect) would be taken away so they couldn't insult them anymore, and so they know what it would feel like without them. Merry Christmas.

Ashley on November 24, 2005 06:21 PM

Ashley, it doesn't surprise me that you would wish this.

Drina on November 24, 2005 10:09 PM

And why do you say this?

Ashley on December 1, 2005 08:57 PM

I say this because it seems from my (admitedly limited) personal experience that many who fervently support Bush do not believe in the freedom of speech, and instead hold that those who dare disagree with them do not deserve basic rights.

This extends beyond mere contempt for those who hold different opinions. Many believe that dissenters should be denied rights, jailed, forcibly removed from their jobs, or sent to Canada.

So this is why I'm not surprised you would wish this. I truly would expect nothing else at this point.
