Dieting woesJune 6, 2004 | 11:46 PMAbout a month ago I started doing the South Beach Diet. I had read in countless articles online that the SBD was not really a diet per se, because unlike other fad diets it didn't necessitate a strict no-carb or no-fat regimen. You didn't have to follow strict calorie rules or calculate food points each day. Sounded great to me. I went to the library to pick up the book and began my new life change with enthusiasm. It's too bad I only lasted about five hours. The main problem as I see it is my addiction to pasta. And bread. And potatoes and stuff. And those are all the things that this diet (and it is a diet) explicitly prohibits. The book includes this long laundry list of forbidden foods (rice, bread, carrots, pasta, corn, potatoes, etc.) that gives me withdrawal symptoms just reading it through. A hopeless shmuck like me is doomed to fail. Since the initial SBD kick off, I restarted the required 2-week carb-cleansing period every time I cheated. I've restarted phase one about thirteen or fourteen times now. And tomorrow I'll have to start it again (it was the white rice and bagel that did me in today). Needless to say I'm not going to send in my success story to the South Beach crew any time soon. Hopefully, though, I'll make the 14 consecutive carb-free days by Christmas time. Who's with me? Comments:On Dieting woesHa, I can't stay on a diet to save my own life Posted by: Andy at June 8, 2004 01:07 PMHey Drina, Try the G.I. Diet. I've been on it from Jan 1 and lost almost 40 pounds. Go to www.gidiet.com. Posted by: liz at June 9, 2004 12:12 AMI know quite a few people who do the south beach diet, and a few have said they did a ladder of the diet by starting on phase 3, so you cut but can still have, once comfortable they go to 2, then they claim they are prepared for phase one, do phase one and ladder back down to 2 and 3. Posted by: tracy at June 9, 2004 06:23 PMTwo of my friends are on the SB Diet too - they say it's pretty hard, but worth it. I, myself, have been on a low-carb diet for almost two months now, and it's hard... definitely hard (oh how I miss french fries!) BUT I've lost a pants-size AND I feel a lot better! If I can do it (Ms. Addicted to Fast Food), you can too! =D Posted by: kc at June 9, 2004 08:42 PM
